The Texas Trail Roundup history...

In 2016, a group of passionate volksmarchers, led by Susan Medlin, asked the AVA National Executive Council (now the AVA Board of Directors) to approve a multi-day, International Marching League (IML) event, to be hosted in San Antonio, Texas. To create this IML event, a new club was formed: Texas Trail Roundup, AVA-979. The club had to sponsor and organize walking events for three years to qualify for consideration as an
official IML festival. The walks must include a minimum of 20 kilometers occurring two days in a row. Volkswalkers who complete the long distances receive both IML and IVV credit.

The first Texas Trail Roundup event was February 24 – 26, 2017 at the Holiday Inn in downtown San Antonio, with a friendship walk Friday, and two IML events Saturday and Sunday. Live music and socials enhanced the events, creating a fun, engaging festival. Subsequent events were also held in February in 2018 and 2019.

In 2020 at its event February 21-23, the TTR was officially recognized as an IML event, and thus became one of two annual IML events in the United States. Held each February, the Texas Trail Roundup is a walking festival that includes walks through the UNESCO missions (including the Alamo), miles along the Riverwalk, the cultural heritage of San Antonio, socials and overall fun with national and international visitors.

To include the armed services in the festival, Susan created the Golden Boot Award in 2020.

In 2023, for the first time in North America, the IVV Olympiad took place in San Antonio, February 19-23. It was held in conjunction with the IML Texas Trail Roundup February 24- 26. The week-long walking festival welcomed over 1,200 individual visitors (please confirm numbers) from around the world, across the nation, and locally.

Susan Medlin passed away in 2025 due to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), but her legacy to bring fun volksmarches to the San Antonio area continues each year with the Texas Trail Roundup.

2026 will be the 6th IML Texas Trail Roundup (the 9th overall).
