Everyone in San Antonio has a favorite place for breakfast tacos, but, quite frankly, there’s no such thing as a bad breakfast taco in San Antonio. (Now Austin — that’s another story. They boast that theirs are the best, but what do they know about tacos?)

Two famous locations are convenient to downtown and the event hotel are  Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia, in Market Square (218 Produce Row) and Taco Haven in the Baja King William / Lavaca neighborhood (1032 South Presa.) You’ll pass Mi Tierra on the Friday friendship walks, and you’ll get within a block or two of Taco Haven on the Saturday walks.

A breakfast taco is a flour tortilla that contains scrambled eggs and (usually) at least one other thing: bacon, chorizo (Mexican sausage), potatoes. It’s topped with salsa, usually made from tomatoes but the green stuff (salsa verde)  is made from tomatillos, which is the Mexican husk tomato. If you’re not used to spicy food, start out light with the salsa: it can be hot! It’s culturally acceptable to top your breakfast taco with other stuff, such as guacamole or sliced avocados, chopped onions, cilantro . . .  we prize creativity. Two breakfast tacos are a typical serving.
